Cleo helps to visualize the relation between the data that we share in menstrual tracking apps and our consumerism habits. The variation in the lights shows the comparison between the spending habits and the ads that are shown on social media during every moment of the menstrual cycle. This opens the conversation about how our personal data is used to manipulate us when we are more prone to buy a certain kind of products.
The opening of the conversation about menstruation has opened channels to facilitate the monitoring of the cycle and the acquisition of information about it. Such is the case of how the knowledge of the release of certain hormones at each stage of the menstrual cycle has helped new technologies to make predictions based on an inaccurate database. The analysis of all this information is sold to third parties, who use it to generate a product placement as well as the promotion of habits and lifestyles that may not be related to the context and plans of the user, thus generating false and contradictory ideas in Regarding the experience of your menstrual cycle.
Cleo is an artefact that helps to visualize the relationship between the data we share with menstrual tracking applications and our consumption habits. Using light as an expressive medium, it will turn on concerning the time a menstrual cycle lasts. The change in the intensity of the light will reflect the comparison between the expenses generated and the advertisements shown during each moment of the cycle. Through the data provided by women at different times of the cycle, it was defined that the times with the most data exchange regarding the ads are menstrual and premenstrual, these being the times when they predispose you to the following times, pre-ovulation and ovulation are the most significant expenses you have.
